Product Overview

For the ultimate in food preservation and the best-tasting foods you can imagine, this KitchenAid 26 cu. ft. French door, platinum interior refrigerator is your best friend. The Preserva® food care system uses not one, but two cooling systems to preserve fresh foods, and a separate system for frozen food. The three-tier freezer drawer with a storage divider lets you organize frozen items on three levels, so you no longer have to pile items up in your freezer. Plus, this model looks as good as it operates. It has platinum interior design, metallic trim and drawer accents, and lighting under the shelves, giving this fridge a premium look for your premium kitchen.

Key Features:

  • Preserva Food Care System
  • Three-Tier Freezer Drawer with Storage Divider
  • Through-the-Door Ice and Water Dispenser
  • Electronic Temperature-Controlled Pantry
  • Platinum Interior Design, Metallic Accents, and Under-Shelf Lighting

Preserva Food Care System
Two independent cooling systems provide a dedicated refrigeration unit for fresh foods, keeping them as tasty as they can be. A separate cooling system, meanwhile, preserves frozen foods. The FreshFlow™ air filter minimizes odors while the produce preserver delays over-ripening, giving you a comprehensive food care system you won’t find in standard refrigerators.

Three-Tier Freezer Drawer with Storage Divider
Organize frozen items on three levels so they’ll be easier to access. A storage divider in the lower basket helps keep smaller items in place.

Through-the-Door Ice and Water Dispenser
You have easy access to chilled water and ice from this dispenser which is conveniently located inside the fridge.

Electronic Temperature-Controlled Pantry
Optimize freshness by giving precise settings for specialized items like meats, deli items, party platters, and wine.

Platinum Interior Design, Metallic Accents, and Under-Shelf Lighting
This beautiful refrigerator has a premium look with silver glossy walls complementing the metallic accents inside the refrigerator. Lighting under the shelves puts light right where you need it, making it easy to find everything including those condiments way at the back.

I've been living with my new KitchenAid KRFF707ESS fridge now for a couple of weeks and feel I have come to know it well enough to write a fair review. I must add that this fridge was not my first choice. I had originally purchased an LG brand which arrived defective. I consider myself lucky that because of this I was inclined to return that unit and opt for a different brand.

What I like:

There is a lot to like about this fridge, starting with its more than obvious solid construction. The exterior stainless steel is thick, not thin and bendable like other brands. The door handles are strong and rugged. All the exterior metal just shines wonderfully compared to many others. It really has an industrial look and feel. You won't be disappointed in its appearance in your kitchen. But that's just the beginning.

When you open the fridge you are greeted with equally eloquent styling. First, the interior coloring is that of a medium grey with nicely accented chrome highlights. I find this a wonderful change from the standard white interiors of most other brands. The shelving is thick glass supported by metal arms that lock into metal braces along the back wall -- very solid compared to most brands which now have flimsy thin shelves that sit on formed plastic humps on the side walls of the fridge. Again KitchenAid opted for industrial strength build quality inside the fridge.

The lighting inside this fridge is fantastic. Lighting is all bright LEDs placed strategically throughout. You definitely won't have a hard time seeing or finding items due to poor lighting. It's really nicely done and the internal chrome accents just shine. Wonderful!

In the inside you will also find a special storage drawer that runs the width of the fridge. This drawer/compartment has its own temperature setting and is supposed to be great for meats, cheeses, small wine bottles, etc. It's a great perk if you have lots of items that you want to store at a different temperature setting than the fridge itself. My usage is not that advanced so I question the advantages of this, and I will also touch on this in my what I don't like section.

I like the balance of fridge space to freezer space. Compared to other fridges in its class this one seems to favor space to the fridge vs the freezer, which for me works better. Although the freezer has more than adequate space to hold enough food for weeks.

My fridge included and air filter pouch, which I guess will help odors to a minimum. It also included a pouch for the crisper that is supposed to help keep your vegetables longer. Both of these items are great perks, although there is a replacement cost every 6 months or so to continue to reap the benefits.

The fridge also included a water filter which filters both the drinking water and the ice unit. Another great perk, but most fridges have this now, and again there is the added maintenance cost for replacing the filter. I'm not sure I'm entirely ready to give up my Brita and use water exclusively from the fridge yet though.
The water and ice dispensers work as they should and once again feel solidly built (not cheap plastic) compared to other fridges. Above the dispensers are the controls for temp, ice type, water, etc. All are well lit and easy to understand. Again quality craftsmanship with the electronic controls.

For the most part the fridge is fairly quiet. Although it seems to run VERY frequently. I don't know a lot about the internals but various fans of different pitches seem to come on and off all the time.

What I don't like:

Shelf height seems to be an issue. With the space taken up the the crisper drawers and the specialty temperature controlled drawers I'm finding it hard to position the shelves to heights that are usable. This may be a caveat of the french door style fridge vs the side by side. My older GE Profile side by side had a lot more shelf height for things like 2 liter soda bottles and other bottled beverages… ok beer and wine coolers etc. :) I am finding myself constantly shifting things around to make things fit. Luckily one of the shelves can collapse to a half shelf depth allowing for taller items to be placed on the shelf below. I just don't like this solution. This height issue also applies to the shelves located on the doors -- some of which are just unusable for anything. I think more thoughtful functional design is needed to compliment the stunning visual interior design.

My first time using the ice dispenser was a surprise as the ice flew out everywhere. You have to hold your glass/container very close to the top of the dispenser to avoid this. A simple design fix would be to better taper the dispenser throat to direct the ice flow downward as now it seems to flow outward anywhere. It's good for a laugh anyway.

My biggest concern is the fridge temperature. I always keep a fridge thermometer on the middle shelf (since the days of my old fridge dying) and even though I have the temperature setting on the factory default of 37 degrees this thermometer consistently reads between 40 and 44 degrees. I've never seen it reach into the 30s. I am not entirely convinced the airflow (fan unit) in this fridge is strong enough to circulate the cold air -- which seems weak from the vents inside the unit. Which brings me to another feature I don't like -- not knowing what temperature the fridge thinks it is at. Many fridges in this price range will show the inside temperature on the display, this one does not. I'm sure it is keeping my fridge cold enough, but is it 37 degrees as it is set to, definitely not.

The last thing I don't like, which is again a caveat of french door style fridges, is having the ice maker in the fridge area itself. I honestly don't feel this area stays cold enough (all the time) for the ice. The ice will on occasion stick together, showing signs of slight melting. This is alarming on a fridge that is less than a month old. Not pleased with that.

Overall:

Overall I love the fridge. The build quality is excellent and well worth the extra money over the lifetime of usage. It looks and feels fantastic. If I had to purchase over again I might consider going back to a side by side for better shelf height options and ice maker improvements. Overall I think most people will be very satisfied with this unit.

We bought this refrigerator when we built our new home thinking we were getting an upgraded one other than the one the builder had. Since we have had it with the different efficiency settings on it, it is soooo annoyingly noisy. It wakes me up in the morning. We have gone to the place where it was purchased and they said yes it is noisy. Don't buy if you have sensitive ears.

Comments about KitchenAid 26 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator with Platinum Interior - Stainless Steel:

Bought 1 yr ago for kitchen remodel. Nice fridge, different drawers for veggies, meats,& plenty of freezer space. A bit noisy (sometimes loud noise for a few minutes) & you can't use water dispenser if other dr is open. Water filter every 6 months are expensive. Overall good fridge so far. Will have to see in another yr if it was worth the expensive price.

Lots of room, love the slim ice maker and freezer!

Comments about KitchenAid 26 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator with Platinum Interior - Stainless Steel:

Nice to have separate drawers in the freezer and the extra space in the refrigerator that the slim ice maker frees up. The extra room is really great and the water/ice dispenser is tall and deep enough to set your glass down. I've even used the measured dispense for cooking - what a step saver! Quieter than the previous KitchenAid refrigerator we had.

Unit ices up

By Jim M

Comments about KitchenAid 26 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator with Platinum Interior - Stainless Steel:

My frig is a year old now. They have been here twice already because the frig side ices up. Several components have been replaced. I ended up purchasing the extended warranty out of self defense. I suppose that's what KA wanted. Left side door flap doesn't always lay flat to allow the door to be closed if you only open left side. The unit does have some nice features, and it looks good, even when it's not working!
