What to Include on Your Spring Cleaning Checklist This Year

It’s finally spring, which means it’s a perfect time to switch up your wardrobe, open the windows and refresh your home.

Spring cleaning isn’t just an annual set of chores to cross off a to-do list. No way! It’s a great time to welcome in the new season by updating your personal space and making it feel more like home. When you give your rooms a deep clean and a décor facelift, you breathe new life into them and might just feel happier too.

For a little motivation, here are a few things to add to your spring cleaning checklist and also some spring cleaning tips to get your home looking amazing.

Wipe Everything Down

Dirt and dust accumulates in even the cleanest of houses, so a good first step in the spring cleaning process is to give everything a good wipe-down. This is one of the most important spring cleaning tips to remember because surface grime collects pretty much everywhere and can really detract from a home’s natural beauty.

Move through one room of the house at a time to make sure each space gets the attention it deserves. In the kitchen, focus on countertops, scrub down your appliances, and the fronts of cabinets. Bedrooms often need extra attention at the windowsills, blinds, and the tops of dressers and nightstands. Don’t forget about dusting out the cubbies of your bookshelves, cleaning the curtains and getting into the nooks and crannies of the electronics that live within your entertainment centre. Starting with a full dusting and wipe down will not only make your home sparkle, but it will also help you fight any seasonal allergies you may normally get.

Make Sure to Vacuum

Once you’ve gotten the dust off of your household surfaces, it’s time to break out the vacuum to tackle the floors, carpet and rugs.

If you have pets, the Miele Blizzard Vacuum is a great spring cleaning tool that lets you vacuum bag-free to eliminate over 99.999% of dust. For small spaces, we love the Miele Compact C1 Canister Vacuum because it’s lightweight, has a universal floor head to use on different kinds of floors and features six levels of suction power.

Don’t Forget to Wash Your Rugs

Although vacuuming is usually enough for routine cleanings, it’s a good idea to wash your rugs as part of your spring cleaning checklist. Washing your rugs will give them a deep clean after you loosen up the bulk of the dirt with a vacuum.

Check out our recent article about how to clean rugs based upon their material and level of use. Unless your rugs are in high-traffic areas or subjected to frequent spills, just once per year should be fine for a full wash with soap and water.

Declutter and Organize

Houses tend to get a little cluttered over the winter when we’re spending more time at home and hanging onto supplies just in case we need them later. However, spring is a great time to get rid of some of that clutter and make organization a priority.

As you get into the deep cleaning process, make piles of clothing and household items to donate, sell or throw away. If you haven’t used something in six months or longer and it’s not a family heirloom with sentimental value, it might be time to take it out of the closet and get it out of the house. Out with the old, in with the new!

For items that you want to hold onto, pick up some organizational bins or new furniture pieces with hidden storage space. Check out The Brick’s blog for more tips about organizing your space

Consider Replacing Your Mattress

This is also a good time to consider the age and cleanliness of your mattress and look into buying a new one to reduce your exposure to allergens and get a better night’s sleep. At a minimum, you’ll want to rotate and flip your mattress so that weight is distributed more evenly across it and to maximize its lifespan.
